How We Help

Breathing Room is NOT a rental assistance program. Breathing Room is an EMERGENCY TRANSITIONAL HOUSING PROGRAM.

Persons in need of rental assistance are encouraged to contact 211 to seek assistance with rental assistance.

HHFP will authorize off-site emergency short term housing for eligible unhoused persons and or households who are homeless.

Authorized off site-shelter means lodging within a hotel or motel. HHFP works exclusively with several hotels near the pantry vicinity to accommodate clients.

The program is designed to provide a bridge of temporary shelter (28 days max) while granting the participant adequate time to find more stable housing and is not intended for individuals who are chronically unhoused.

Prime consideration will be given to clients who are at or below 30% Area Medium Income.  Persons who have suffered catastrophic hardship or victimization, (fire, flood, fleeing domestic and sexual violence, etc.) are encouraged to apply.

Minimal housing will be three days. And all applicants receiving assistance are paired with a case worker who will evaluate in face-to-face meetings the continued need for housing assistance and work toward more stable housing.  Assistance needs longer than 7 days will require weekly check-ins with a case-worker to maintain assistance.

Assistance will not exceed 28 calendar days and is designed to help smooth transition while more permanent housing is secured.

Priority assistance will be given to those whose primary residence prior to being unhoused was within the boundaries of Oakland County.

Housing will be at a local hotel near the pantry premises.

Prospective applicants may come into the pantry on a walk-in basis to speak with an intake specialist to evaluate need.

Approval can take up to 24-48 hours depending on the situation.  Please call the pantry to speak with an intake specialist about your specific situation and how we can assist you. Online applications are not available.

Please note that funding is grant based and limited and may not be available at the time of need.  Call to find out if funding is available.

"Thank you for assisting my St. Vincent de Paul client with lodging for a month at motel 6.  God bless your efforts! P.S. Things have worked out for him as he shares an apartment with a fellow co-worker and should be okay.” J. Troshen
